Pioneer on many levels. Elfrida Andrée came of a politically liberal family in Visby. At the age of 14 she travelled to Stockholm to train as an organist, and two years later, in 1857, she became the first woman in Sweden to have gained an organist’s diploma at the Kungliga Musikaliska akademien (the Royal Swedish Academy of Music).

Elfrida Andrée was a nineteenth century Swedish composer known equally well in her native country as a pioneer advocate for the rights of women. Andrée was the younger daughter of Andreas Andrée, a progressive politician and profound lover of music, and her elder sister was the acclaimed opera singer Fredrika Stenhammar (1836 -- 1880).
