Launched in 1999, Europe’s single currency is now shared by 17 EU countries and around 331 million citizens, making it one of the world’s most important currencies and one of the EU’s greatest achievements. The euro is the result of the European Union's project for economic and monetary union that came fully into being on 1 January 2002 and it is now the currency used by the majority of the European Union's member states, with all but Denmark bound to adopt it. Since the introduction of the euro, the ECB has been responsible for preserving citizens’ trust in our currency. Together with cash, a digital euro would be accessible to all and offer greater choice to ways of paying.
