EL OBEID , 07 October, 2020 / 10:30 PM ().-The agreement to separate religion from the state after three decades of Islamic rule in Sudan is a matter that is still under discussion, according to a Catholic Prelate in the North-East African country.. In a recent interview with ACI Africa, Bishop Tombe Trille Kuku of Sudan’s El Obeid Diocese faulted local media for reporting that Sudanese can Islam in Sudan. The widespread practice and institutionalisation of Islam has been powerful in forming the idea of a ‘Sudanese Muslim’ identity. Furthermore, as Islam differentiates the North Sudanese population from their Christian counterparts in South Sudan, the religion has come to be seen as a core part of the national identity.

Smaller Christian groups include the Africa Inland Church, Armenian Apostolic Church, Sudan Interior Church, Sudan Pentecostal Church, Seventh-day Adventist Church, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. South Sudan does not have an official religion and estimates on the numbers of followers of various faiths are unavailable. However, the majority of the South Sudanese population follows Christianity, often intermingled with traditional cultural practices. Sudanese Muslims are adherents of the Sunni branch of Islam, sometimes called orthodox, by far the larger of the two major branches; the other is Shia, which is not represented in Sudan. Sunni Islam in Sudan is not marked by a uniform body of belief and practice, however.
